Wayne State Medical School Curriculum Overview: 

As a Wayne State Medical School student, your first 1.5 years are spent as a pre-clinical student, mainly learning through lectures.  Starting your second half of second year, Wayne State med students are in clinical rotations.

Pre-Clinical Years:

The first year at Wayne State Medical School focuses on basic science, molecular biology, and pathophysiology courses. Then, you transition to organ-based learning.  You learn clinical skills throughout this entire time. Students have the option to take electives in community engagement and research.

  • Cardiopulmonary

Most MD candidates at Wayne State graduate within 4 years. There is less flexibility in the curriculum to take time off, even in the 4th year, because of the large work-load of clinical requirements.

Wayne State University Medical School Clinical Curriculum:

Clinical Years:

During the 3rd and 4th years of medical school, students are in clinical rotations. For 6 months, you work with one doctor 1/2 afternoon per week at an outpatient primary care clinic. You are required 11 months of clinical electives your 3rd year, but can opt to take 12 months of clinical clerkships. During your fourth year, you do six 4-week electives, emergency medicine, and a required sub-internship.
