Tips to Answer NYU Long Island Secondaries

NYULI Pre-Writing Tip: The NYU Long Island secondary prompts have changed significantly in the past two years. We would NOT recommend that you pre-write this secondary prior to the publication of official prompts.

NYU Long Island Secondary Application Tip #1: Incorporate primary care stories and examples throughout your NYU Long Island secondaries. When you give stories, think about the implications of what you observed, and how you can improve primary care in the future. For example, in the NYU Long Island secondary essay prompt about patient-centered care, you can tell a patient story and how that patient benefited (or could better benefit) with patient-centered care. Make sure to discuss your insights and how that reflects the type of future health care provider you want to be.

NYU Long Island Secondary Application Tip #2: Don’t forget to incorporate your other community service activities and other healthcare extra-curricular activities! For example, we have had students who worked on health policy and value-based care research. We have had students who volunteer in free clinics and discuss these experiences in their NYU Long Island secondary.  We recommend our students incorporate these extra-curricular activities when working with them through our secondary essay edits.

NYU Long Island Secondary Application Tip #3: You should only apply if you are sure you want to go into Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, and General Surgery. If you want to do a specialty, such as ophthalmology or ENT, this may not be the right school for you.

NYU Long Island Secondary Application Tip #4: Be familiar with Long Island. The location, patient population, and opportunities around Long Island are not synonymous with New York City, specifically the lower east side where NYU Grossman is located.

NYU Long Island Secondary Application Tip #5: New York University Long Island School of Medicine focuses on primary care. And, you need to prove to the NYU Long Island School of Medicine admissions committee that you are deeply invested in primary care. Discuss your experiences and your aspirations in primary care settings.

NYU Long Island Secondary Application Tip #6: For the questions about academic fluctuations, do not feel compelled that you have to answer it. DO NOT explain any B’s or B+’s (we are talking to you – applicant with mostly A’s).

Students write about the following on NYU Long Island secondary essay #1:

    • Upward trends in their GPA
    • C’s and lower  on their transcripts
    • Lower GPA during college when they were not pre-med and then discuss how their post-bacc GPA is a lot higher
    • Fluctuations in academic records due to personal circumstances, including challenges during COVID-19.
