Pre-clinical years

Curriculum Overview:
As an Eastern Virginia Medical School med student, your first 1.5 years are spent as a pre-clinical student in the CareForward Curriculum. Eastern Virginia Medical School’s pre-clinical phase starts with a review of human physiology for the first 8 weeks, then dives into the study of pathology and organ systems. The entire pre-clinical phase is taught through a collaborative, case-based approach which emphasizes integration of scientific knowledge into clinical practice. Medical students at Eastern Virginia gain hands-on clinical experience starting day-one by working with standardized patients (SPs)! During the pre-clerkship phase, students are graded on a grading scale of Honors, High Pass, Pass, or Fail.
The Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Program is a unique part of Eastern Virginia Medical School’s pre-clinical phase! Through CEL, students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom within underserved Hampton Roads communities. Students can select from one of six pathways: Health Equity, Older Adults, First Response, Global Health Equity, Mental Health, or Nutrition and Exercise. These pathways include clinical and educational opportunities for students to address social determinants of health head-on!
The blocks during the first 1.5 years of medical school are:
- Human Structure (8 weeks)
- Foundation of Disease (10 weeks)
- Introduction to Organ Systems (10 weeks)
- Hormones and Reproductive Health (9 weeks)
- Heart, Lung, and Kidney (10 weeks)
- Brain, Mind, and Behavior (9 weeks)

clinical years
Clinical Curriculum:
During the 3rd and 4th years of medical school, students are in clinical rotations. All clerkship rotations are graded Honors, High Pass, Pass, or Fail except for the Career Exploration clerkship which is graded Pass/Fail only.
The third-year curriculum consists of:
- Family Medicine (6 weeks)
- Internal Medicine (6 weeks)
- Surgery (8 weeks)
- OBGYN (6 weeks)
- Pediatrics (6 weeks)
- Psychiatry (6 weeks)
- Career Exploration (6 weeks) – opportunity for electives from clinical exposures to research, global health encounters, away rotations, or self-directed learning!
The Career Exploration Clerkship is unique to EVMS. The Career Exploration Elective provides students with the flexibility to participate in electives. We’ve had students in the past do away rotations in other states in order to establish connections, especially in competitive specialties! This is protected time during the clerkship phase to participate in research or global health opportunities, away rotations, or self-directed learning through online certifications, courses, and training programs.
During the fourth year, students take USMLE Step 2 alongside other requirements including:
- Acting Internship in intended specialty (4 weeks)
- Ambulatory medicine (4 weeks)
- Critical care (4 weeks)
- Community-engaged learning capstone (4 weeks)
- Clinical skills and ultrasound capstone (2 sessions)
- Residency TIPS (2 weeks)
- 14 weeks free for student-selected electives!
Main clinical rotation sites:
- Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (EVMS’s primary teaching hospital)
- Sentara Leigh Hospital
- Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital
- Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center
- Sentara Ambulatory Care Clinic
- Sentara Heart Hospital
Note that Eastern Virginia Medical School does not have its own hospital; therefore, students can rotate through a lot of different clinical sites!
