Texas A&M Secondary Application Tip #1: Tell stories. The Texas A&M medical school secondary application has a high word limit so that you have ample space to tell stories. For example, we encourage our students to write stories about a time they became more aware of other cultures and a story that shows how they reflect the core values of Texas A&M College of Medicine. Additionally, you could write stories of a field in medicine you are interested in (e.g. an interesting orthopedic patient case if you are interested in orthopedics) and stories that reflect your hardship.

The strongest Texas A&M applications, in our opinion, will include stories where you have had to problem-solve. Additionally, you should include stories where you have helped the Texas community.

Texas A&M Secondary Application Tip #2: If you decide to discuss hardships, be sure to include the following:

    • How did you overcome the challenge or academic road bump?
    • What did you learn from this experience?
    • What will you do differently in the future?
    • Reflections will allow the reader to understand your personal characteristics like problem-solving, resilience and grit.

Texas A&M Secondary Application Tip #3: In the Texas A&M Medical School secondary application prompt, “The Texas A&M College of Medicine embraces the Aggie Core Values of Respect, Excellence, Leadership, Loyalty, Integrity and Selfless Service,” there are several great ways to answer this.

One question we receive is, “Do I need to talk about each core value?” Our answer is typically “No, but you should try to discuss how you reflect many of the Aggie Core Values.” Additionally, we advise our students we help through our secondary essay edits to add 1-2 anecdotes that reflect those core values. The adage of “show, don’t tell” is very relevant for your medical school applications!

Texas A&M Secondary Application Tip #4: If you are applying to the EnMed program, the program values problem-solving and innovation. Make sure you discuss your research experiences, any projects that reflect problem-solving, and other entrepreneurial pursuits (even if they are not in medicine). Describe how your career in medicine incorporates engineering, problem-solving, and medicine. Dr. Rizal has ample experience in healthcare entrepreneurship, so reach out to her through our contact form if you have questions about healthcare innovation!

Texas A&M Secondary Application Tip #5: For the Texas A&M secondary optional question, “List the area (or areas) of medicine that appeals to you and briefly explain” – this seems like a straightforward question, and it is. But, if you want to stand out, you should link it to your vision to improve medicine throughout your career as a physician AND link it to your previous clinical experiences. For example, if you are interested in the field of rheumatology, you should ideally mention any clinical experience in rheumatology as a premedical student, how your prior rheumatology clinical experiences shaped your motivation for medicine, and how you want to improve our understanding of immunology in the future.

Some medical school applicants skip this question because they don’t know what field of medicine to enter. We strongly encourage you to answer all optional questions, including this optional question, on your secondary applications. Answering optional questions gives the admissions committee members more insight about you. For this essay, if you don’t know what specific field of medicine you are interested in, you can list 2 or 3. Additionally, you can discuss specific populations you want to work with. For example, some applicants mentioned they are interested in women’s health, but don’t necessarily say they want to be OB/GYN.
