Tips to Answer UConn Secondary Essays

UConn Secondary Application Tip #1: If you can, try to incorporate stories. Yes, even in these short responses! You can discuss a memorable patient or clinical encounter when highlighting your healthcare experiences. You can also discuss a story from your research projects or during COVID-19.

UConn Secondary Application Tip #2: For the question, “Highlight your experiences in the health care field. What insights have you gained about potential problems you will face as a physician,” mention all your experiences in healthcare. Many students have experiences being a Medical Assistant, Nurse, or Physical Therapist. Even if you weren’t working with a physician, these experiences are EXCELLENT healthcare experiences.

Additionally, you can answer this question on a more personal front. If you’ve interacted with the medical system yourself or have a loved one suffer from a disease, then you can include this in your response too.

UConn Secondary Application Tip #3: If you have any affiliations or know alumni / current faculty at Connecticut and University of Connecticut, mention it in your secondary essay.

UConn Secondary Application Tip #4: For the COVID question, make sure to discuss what you did throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Students often think that they should only discuss disruptions, but we advise our students who work with us through our application packages to discuss what they accomplished during the pandemic.
