Tips to Answer UChicago Secondaries
University of Chicago Pre-writing Guidance: Pritzker changed its UChicago secondary essays prompts in the 2023-2024 cycle. This might not be a great secondary to pre-write this year. University of Chicago Medical School Secondary Application Tip #3: Aim to add at least 1 story in your UChicago secondaries. For example, when you discuss your research, you can discuss a time when you faced a research challenge or problem-solved through a research problem. Additionally, in the challenge essay, you should give a story (and not talk in generalities) about the challenge. Finally, in the optional essay, you can include a patient care story from a clinical experience.
University of Chicago Medical School Secondary Application Tip #4: Highlight your leadership, passion to change healthcare, and impact on society. The questions are geared towards learning more about what you did in gap years and your extra-curricular activities.
University of Chicago Medical School Secondary Application Tip #5: For the question, “share with us a difficult or challenging situation you have encountered and how you dealt with it. In your response, identify both the coping skills you called upon to resolve the dilemma, and the support person(s) from whom you sought advice,” be detailed when explaining how you handled the specific challenge. Previous students have talked about how they leaned on social support, paint a clear picture about how they organize their tasks, and discuss wellness techniques like meditation that are involved with.
University of Chicago Medical School Secondary Application Tip #6: Do you need to answer the optional question? YES! You can literally write about anything and we suggest that if you have no extenuating circumstances that you want to mention, then talk about an activity or passion that is important to you. Typically, we treat Pritzker’s optional essay as a diversity essay. Remember, add at least 1 story! This is a good place to continue to write about urban health, Chicago, patient care, and commitment to decreasing health inequalities.
