How to Get Into Mayo Clinic Medical School – Know the Curriculum
Curriculum Overview:
Mayo has a pre-clinical curriculum for the first two years. Throughout the pre-clinical curriculum are “selective” times, which are 2-week blocks where you can learn about a specific topic. Then, you take your USMLE Step 1 and then do 2 years of clinical rotations. For a sample curriculum map, check out Mayo’s Curriculum Map.
Additionally, the student body is split up into 6 learning communities. Together with your “Society,” you participate in small group learning, community service projects, and other social activities.
Pre-Clinical Years:
The first two years at Mayo Medical School focuses on basic biology and physiology. During your second year, you learn medicine through organ systems.

- OB/GYN
- Nutrition and Digestion
Prior to starting clinics, there is a 5 week pre-clinical block which eases students into clinical rotations.

- “selective” time – one to two week blocks to explore an area of medicine you are interested in. You can choose selectives on or off campus, regionally, nationally, or internationally.

The curriculum is built around excellent med student wellness. Throughout your first two years, there is “down time” of selective time. The third year curriculum has 2 months of vacation time. The fourth year curriculum builds in at least 12 weeks of vacation.

Mayo School of Medicine Clinical Curriculum:
During your 3rd year of medical school, you do your core clinical rotations. During your fourth year, you are required 5 courses and can use the rest of the time doing other clinical electives, interviews, or research. These courses span advanced electives in pediatrics, surgery, and medicine. The nice thing about the third year schedule is that there are 8 dedicated weeks to vacation, research, and intersession in the middle of your 3rd year.
The core clinical curriculum consists of:
- Surgery (6 weeks)
- Internal Medicine (6 weeks)
- Family Medicine (3 weeks)
- Pediatrics (6 weeks)
- Neurology (4 weeks)
- Psychiatry (5 weeks) + 1 week off
